Vintage

A very dry 2020 spring proved tough for the vineyards in Clare with the 2021 red crops well below average. The small berry sizes and low cropping levels intensifying flavours and tannin. A very good red vintage!

Winemaking

A blend of three Clare Valley vineyards, kept separate until final blending. Each parcel was harvested around 14.0 Be', crushed and fermented in open topped vessels, before basket pressing to older seasoned French oak hogsheads for 15 months. Final blending and bottling occurring in October 2023, unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting

Colour  - Brick red in colour with crimson hues.
Bouquet - Lifted plums, red fruits, subtle French oak chariness, and dark chocolate impress on the nose.

Palate - Flavours of dark chocolate and olive tapenade feature strongly, further immersed with red fruits, riper plums, and biscuity fine-grained tannins in a long finish.

About The Winery

Nestled within the picturesque embrace of Clare Valley, Woodvale Wines stands as a testament to the harmonious marriage of wine, terroir, and sustainability. Founded by the esteemed Australian winemaker, Kevin Mitchell, this boutique winery has forged a path that not only yields exceptional wines but also treads lightly on the earth.

After years of carving a reputation as Clare Valley's inaugural Winemaker of the Year, Kevin Mitchell decided to return to his winemaking roots. In 2004, he took a step back from his executive role at the acclaimed Kilikanoon label, a winery he had passionately cultivated over the years. His quest was clear: to create boutique, limited-release wines that would intimately connect with the land.

Located in the charming village of Penwortham, Woodvale embodies a philosophy deeply rooted in sustainability. Here, the commitment to working in harmony with nature is paramount. The vineyards, lovingly nurtured by Kevin and his team, provide grapes the freedom to thrive in their natural state. This approach ensures that the wines genuinely capture the essence of Clare Valley's terroir.

In 2021, under Kevin Mitchell's meticulous guidance, Woodvale crafted the exceptional Sharegarden Shiraz from Clare Valley.

This wine represents the epitome of Woodvale's dedication to sustainability. It is a testament to their belief in working with the environment, allowing the grapes to express themselves with minimal intervention.
