Margan Wines

About The Wine
2021 Shiraz
The grapes for this wine came from the Timbervines Vineyard which is part of the original Lindemans Fordwich Sill plantings of the late 1960’s. This 30 acre block was planted on original Busby vine stock and has been farmed using vertical shoot positioning. It crops at around 1 tonne to the acre which is very low. Picked at around the 13.5 baume mark, the climate of the Hunter provides us with medium bodied reds with great natural acid and lower alcohol.
Winemaking
This Shiraz was fermented under relatively cool conditions with a structured aeration program, allowing for full fruit expression without over-extraction of tannins. After primary fermentation, it was transferred to 4 & 5 year old French oak hogsheads for a period of eighteen months to allow it to soften and mature. A mild summer allowed for excellent acid retention and a long ripening period resulting in elegant fruit character and seamless acid balance. The 2021 Margan Shiraz is lightly framed, elegant and poised.

About The Winery
Margan Wines is a multi-generational grape growing and winemaking business with an acclaimed wine and food tourism operation. It was established by Andrew and Lisa Margan in 1996 in the historic village of Broke and now includes the second generation who have joined the business. Alessa and Ollie as viticulturist and winemaker respectively are back home and join the Margan Team after experience abroad.
The estate now farms 100 hectares of wines following regenerative agricultural principles and is certified Sustainably Farmed (Sustainable Winegrowers Australia).
These vineyards are all in the Broke Fordwich GI and are mostly planted on the Forwich Sill, a unique volcanic soil formation dating back 200 millions years. The vineyards are a combination of old vines (50yr plus) planted to traditional varieties such as Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz, as well as pioneering varieties including Albarino, Barbera and field blends of Shiraz/Mouvedre and Tempranillo/Graciano/Shiraz. A gentle approach in the winery at Margan aims to produce outstanding wines of regional definition and varietal typicity.
They follow a detailed Environmental Management Plan supporting the four pillars of sustainability to reduce our impact across all business operations. The four pillars they focus on are:
1. Reduction of greenhouse gases (emissions as a result of production).
2. Energy efficiency (reducing energy use via solar panel, energy efficient lighting etc).
3. Water management (use of rainwater and recycling grey water).
4. Reduction of waste (recycling all our waste-green, glass, plastics, oil etc).
